Cathedral Prep Holiday Break Athletics Roundup:
• Girls basketball took part in the KSA Holiday Tournament in Orlando, FL. The Ramblers would go 2-1 on their trip. In their first game, they earned a huge 50-45 win over Wasilla (AK), a seven-time state champion from Alaska. Wasilla was unbeaten coming in and ranked preseason top 50 in the US. The Ramblers were led by Jayden McBride's 28 points. Jayden also eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark during the game, joining her sisters Kayla and Karlee in that club. Addie Biel added 14 points. They would then pick up a 60-47 win over defending Massachusetts state champion Foxborough (MA), snapping the Warriors 24-game win streak. McBride and Biel each finished with 20 points. In the national bracket championship, the Ramblers would fall, 59-30, to the number one ranked team from Texas, Glen Rose High School (TX). Biel scored 10 for Prep. 🏀
• Boys basketball was in action over the break. Varsity picked up a victory in their lone contest, besting Austintown Fitch (OH), 69-58. Down by seven in the third quarter, the Ramblers went on a 23-4 run to get the win. Spencer Kanne had 18 points. Nando Mirarchi tossed in 15, while Michael Thompson had 12. JVs dropped a pair of games, losing to Mercyhurst Prep, 43-40, and Austintown Fitch, 52-49. 🏀
• Varsity hockey finished 1-1 over the break. They fell to St. Ed’s (OH), 3-0. They would pick up a victory over Canon-McMillan, 3-2. Joey Walter, Vincent Scalise and Gian Catrabone scored for the Ramblers. Tanner Ball made 30 saves to get the win in net. 🏒
• Prep Wrestling took 36th at the Powerade Tournament at Canon-McMillan. In the first round, Will English (114), Gabe Dorman (145), Jaden Crockett (172) and Omar Arrington (285) picked up pins. Bo Martucci (160) and Max Spaulding (215) scored decisions. They all would drop their second-round matches. Keagan Oler (127) won his consolation first round match by tech fall. In the consolidation second round, Dorman, Martucci and Arrington scored falls. English, Trevor Bruno (139) and Corey Kowalski (189) had decisions. In the consolation third round, Spaulding had a pin, while Dorman and Martucci scored decisions. 🤼♂️
• NEWS: Congratulations to Dajoure Hollingsworth (RB), Jiavani Cooley (OL), Aden Wentz (DL) and RJ Roberts (ATH). They were all named to the Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class 5A All-State football team. 🏈

Kayla Bogdanski '25 and Ava Hensler '25 held a winter clothing drive on campus before we went on break to help those in our community. • Girls basketball went on the road and picked up a sweep over Fairview. Varsity raced out to a 21-5 lead after the first quarter and the Tigers, 44-30. Jayden McBride led the Ramblers with 16 points. Addie Biel added 11, while Lena Walz finished with 10. JVs picked up a 37-33 victory. Jessica Beveridge led the way with 11 points. Mady Brzezinski finished with eight. 🏀
• Boys varsity basketball closed out the Tarkanian Classic with a 71-65 victory over Prestonwood Christian (TX). Nando Mirarchi had 16. Michael Thompson finished with 15, while Spencer Kanne had 14. 🏀
• LATE WEDNESDAY SCORE: Boys freshmen basketball fell to McDowell, 50-25. 🏀
Basil Bannister ’24 had an exciting day shadowing Dr. Ajaipal Kang, a plastic surgeon at UPMC Hamot, yesterday. She even got the chance to observe surgeries in the operating room! This is just one example of the opportunities our pathway students are exposed to. They get real life experience in the fields they aspire to pursue, advanced preparation for higher education and their careers, and leadership development skills. #Prep #MedPath ⚕
National Art Honor Society students were able to spread some Christmas cheer at UPMC Hamot yesterday! Students painted different wintery designs on the windows so patients can see them upon entry on the different floors. • In their last meet before the break, girls swimming & diving bested Mercyhurst Prep, 129-22. Ellie Brugger won four events. Sara Chase, Chloe Borrero, Josie Dufala and Ellie Natemeier all won three times. Maria Costa won a pair of events, while Ange Terrizzi won diving. 🏊♀️
• Boys swimming & diving also picked up a big victory before break, defeating Mercyhurst Prep, 137-11. Owen Carson took home four events. Callum Snider-Mills, Jack Raimy, Drew Brown and Ely Cooney all won twice. Teddy Terrizzi won the diving competition. 🏊♂️
• Wrestling picked up a 48-18 win over Meadville. Corey Kowalski (189), Max Spaulding (285), Amir Johnson (127), Andrew Gammon (139) and Gabe Dorman (145) all had pins. Brandon Byrd (152) and Bo Martucci (160) scored decisions. 🤼♂️
• Boys varsity basketball picked up their first win of the season at the Tarkanian Classic in Las Vegas. The Ramblers defeated Lakeside School (WA), 57-39, after jumping out to a 19-0 advantage to open the game. Spencer Kanne led all scorers with 22 points. Nando Mirarchi had 13, while Michael Thompson finished with 10. 🏀

Congratulations to Jiavani Cooley ’24. He signed his National Letter of Intent today to play football at the University of Pittsburgh. A three-year starter on the offensive and defensive line, he helped lead one of the state’s most explosive rushing offenses. Last Friday, our Architecture & Engineering Path students took a trip to the Hagen History Center to see the Frank Lloyd Wright office exhibit. The Hagen History Center features Frank Lloyd Wright’s San Francisco field office, fully and accurately reassembled right here in Erie. While at the History Center, students spoke with architects Jeff Kidder and Laura Howard from the Erie architecture firm Kidder Architects. Students also met with Chris Anderson, the Curator for Education at the HHC. Students were joined by Cathedral Prep alumnus Jackson Frederick ’22, who is a second-year architecture student at Penn State University. He was also able to answer student questions about studying architecture in college. #Prep #Archiecture #Engineering

• Girls basketball swept Erie High. Varsity rolled to a 59-14 win over the Royals. Addie Biel led the way with 14 points. Jayden McBride, Ava Lucarotti and Lena Walz all added 12. JV started the night with a 44-15 win. Jasmine Woodard had 10 points to lead the way. Brooklyn DiRaimo, Grace Orlando and Mady Brzezinski all chipped in eight. 🏀
• Boys basketball finished 1-1 yesterday. Varsity took part in their first game of the Tarkanian Classic, falling to Faith Lutheran (NV), 66-55. Nando Mirarchi led the Ramblers with 25 points. Freshmen picked up a 56-44 victory over Oil City at the Joann Mullen Gymnasium. 🏀
AFJROTC cadets joined other volunteers in the Erie community at the PA Soldiers and Sailors Home on Wreaths Across America Day. They placed wreaths on gravesites to commemorate our fallen veterans. #Prep #AFJROTC

• Wrestling went 5-0 and took the Rambler Duals title at the Joann Mullen Gymnasium. They began with a 43-24 win over St. Joe’s (NY). Aidan Carter (107), Amir Johnson (127), Gabe Dorman (152), Brandon Byrd (160), Jaden Crockett (172), and Corey Kowalski (189) all had pins. Collin O’Rourke (114) scored a major decision, while Keagan Oler (133) earned a decision. They would then pick up a 52-20 win over Perry (OH). Dorman, Byrd and Max Spaulding (285) had falls, while Kegan Oler had a major decision. The Ramblers would beat South Fayette in match three, 49-19. Johnson, Oler, Dorman, Crockett, Kowalski, and Spaulding all had pins. Omar Arrington (285) scored a major decision, while Byrd scored a decision. They would shutout Ashtabula Edgewood (OH), 67-0. Andrew Gammon (139), Trevor Bruno (145), Dorman, Kowalski, Arrington, and O’Rourke had falls. Oler scored a tech. fall, while Carter and Will English (121) had major decisions. Byrd and Crockett earned decisions. The championship match against St. Ed’s (OH) would come down to the wire, with the Ramblers prevailing, 36-33. Oler, Gammon, Byrd, and Kowalski had pins. Crockett had a decision. English scored the match-deciding victory with his sudden victory. 🤼♂️
• Girls swimming took third overall out of 24 teams at the Viking Invitational in Cleveland, OH. The medley relay of Maria Costa, Jaslene Cage, Ellie Natemeier, and Josie Dufala finished fourth. Costa took second in the IM, while Ellie Brugger and Brianne Ryan finished eighth and 10th, respectively. Cage took fourth in the 50 free. The 200 free relay of Costa, Dufala, Kendal Johnston, and Cage took third. Costa took third in the 100 backstroke, while Chloe Borrero finished seventh. Cage took sixth in the 100 breaststroke, while Brugger finished 10th. The 400 free relay of Johnston, Brugger, Borrero, and Natemeier took eighth. 🏊♀️
• Boys swimming also finished third at the Viking Invitational. The medley relay of Jack Raimy, Matt Hinman, Owen Carson, and Colin Troutman finished fourth. Troutman finished ninth in the 50 free and eighth in the 100 free. The 200 free relay of Hinman, Drew Brown, Evan Calvert, and Callum Snider-Mills took sixth. Raimy finished first in the 100 back. Hinman finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke, while Brown took ninth. The 400 free relay of Troutman, Snider-Mills, Carson, and Raimy took fifth. 🏊♂️
• Boys basketball was swept by Canisius (NY). Varsity fell to the Crusaders, 70-52. Ahmari Horton led the way with 11, while Michael Thompson had 10. JVs dropped their game, 78-53. 🏀
Congratulations to Tori Spearman ’24. She took first place in the all-around event at Level Nine at the Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Her win qualified her for The Laurie Hernandez Champions Challenge. She also helped her team finish in second place overall. Congrats, Tori! #PrepPride
